Numbering system

CASRN: 4706-78-9

EINECS: 225-190-4

Molecular formula and molecular weight

Molecular formula: C12H25KO4S; C12H26O4S.K;

Molecular weight: 304.49.

Structural formula

nature

Appearance (1), white to yellowish powder or flake or needle crystal; (2), liquid.

The smell has a slight odor.

Solubility Soluble in water. The aqueous solution is colorless, transparent and translucent, and the transparency is greatly affected by the concentration and temperature. Generally, as the concentration of the solution increases, the opacity increases; as the temperature decreases, the opacity also increases.

Hygroscopicity Powdered potassium lauryl sulfate is easy to absorb moisture and agglomerate, but the block strength is not high.

Physical-chemical properties

Flash point, °C> 90

Stability Stable to alkali, weak acid and hard water; unstable to strong acid, easy to hydrolyze, reduced to alcohol.

Hazard Solid form: flammable, irritating. The harmful products of combustion are carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and the like. Moderately irritating to the skin, eyes, and respiratory system. Acting with strong oxidants can cause combustion to occur.

GHS (seventh revised edition) label:

Liquid form: irritation. It has moderate irritation to the skin and eyes.

GHS (seventh revised edition) label:

Animal Toxicology Literature [1] studied the metabolism of potassium lauryl sulfate in rats. Studies have shown that by intraperitoneal, oral, intravenous administration, in the urine within 12h, about 17% of inorganic sulfate metabolites, metabolites, there is also an ester, butyric acid 4-sulfate.

Ecology may be harmful to the environment, and special attention should be paid to water bodies.

Biodegradability is degradable.

Characteristics Excellent foaming, decontamination, emulsifying, wetting, penetrating, dispersing, solubilizing and antistatic properties. Hard water resistant.

Special items (1) Avoid using products directly related to children, such as children's bath, shampoo, skin care products, etc.

Method and process

Sulfation reaction by a continuous reactor (such as a falling film reactor) is currently the most widely used method for preparing sulfate salts.

Usually, dodecyl alcohol and sulfur trioxide are subjected to a sulfation reaction through a reactor and neutralized by an alkaline substance such as potassium hydroxide.

U.S. Patent No. 8,921,588, Process for preparing sulfates and/or sulfonates in a micro-reaction system, proposes a synthetic process. In this process, raw materials such as sulfur trioxide and alcohol are reacted in a falling film reactor at a molar ratio of 1:1 between 30 and 60 °C.

U.S. Patent 6,455,488 Process of making alkyl sulfate granulates describes the preparation of a particulate alkyl sulfate, but does not involve a synthetic process.
